Analysis of hydrogen supply capacity in 8 key regions in China

In recent years, the popularity of fuel cell vehicles has increased year by year, but its actual promotion progress is not satisfactory, one of the important reasons lies in the imperfect hydrogen supply system and the lack of infrastructure of hydrogenation stations. Fortunately, various forces are vigorously invested to promote the development of hydrogen energy, hydrogen supply problem is expected to be gradually solved.


According to incomplete statistics from GGII, there will be about 23 new hydrogen production projects invested in China in 2020. Among them, water electrolysis hydrogen production projects 7, accounting for 30%; 6 hydrogen production projects with coke oven gas, accounting for 26%. In terms of the investment and construction sites of hydrogen production projects, the projects are mainly distributed in 11 provinces such as Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang and Anhui.


From the perspective of the main body of the invested projects, there are mainly state power Group, coal/coking enterprises, chemical enterprises, foreign gas companies and energy companies and other types of enterprises; From the perspective of the use of hydrogen in hydrogen production projects, domestic hydrogen production projects are not only used for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but also used in metallurgy, electronics, chemical and other fields.


With the new hydrogen production projects gradually put into production, domestic hydrogen supply is expected to be effectively guaranteed. What is the hydrogen energy resource endowment of each major fuel cell vehicle region in China? What is the progress of the construction of hydrogen supply system? Hydrogen energy development in Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningdong, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Sichuan and other 8 regions is summarized as follows:


1, Hebei province,


Hebei province is rich in renewable energy and has certain advantages in producing hydrogen from wind power. At the same time, it is a major province in steel, coal and chemical industry and has a large output of industrial byproduct hydrogen.


From the perspective of hydrogen production from renewable energy sources, the Heper hydrogen production project (annual output of 1400 tons of hydrogen) has been put into production. The Guyuan Demonstration Project for comprehensive utilization of hydrogen production from Wind Power of Hebei Construction Investment (phase I project with an annual output of 637 tons of hydrogen) has met the production conditions. Hebei Construction investment Co., LTD. Chongli large-scale solar storage and complementary hydrogen production project (designed to produce 1475 tons of hydrogen per year) will soon be completed. Phase II of Heper Hydrogen Production Project, Phase II of Hebei Construction Investment Guyuan Hydrogen Production Project and Hebei Construction Investment Chongli Hydrogen production Project are under construction and will be completed by the end of June 2021.


In addition, In 2020, Xuyang Group announced its entry into the Hebei hydrogen market, and now has the ability to prepare high purity hydrogen; The coking by-product hydrogen production project of Hesteel in Tangshan has also been completed, which can purify 1.6 billion cubic meters of hydrogen per year. Hebei qiming hydrogen energy has launched a comprehensive utilization project of 4600Nm³/h hydrogen energy in 2020, with an annual output of 36.8 million Nm³ of high-purity hydrogen and 4.088 million Nm³ of industrial hydrogen.


With the gradual production of the above projects, it is expected to provide a strong guarantee for the hydrogen supply of Hebei and even the whole Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.


2 The shandong


Shandong has abundant byproduct hydrogen resources and various hydrogen production methods. By 2020, its industrial byproduct of hydrogen has reached 570,000 tons/year. Hydrogen production methods include: coke oven gas hydrogen production, natural gas hydrogen production, ion membrane caustic soda hydrogen production, methanol hydrogen production, chlorine alkali tail gas hydrogen production, electrolytic water hydrogen production, etc. Shandong is rich in renewable resources and has great potential to develop green hydrogen renewable energy.


In terms of hydrogen production, the typical enterprises in Shandong include Yankuang Group, which has built a hydrogen extraction facility of 800Nm³/h. Anze special gas, with two water electrolysis production lines, with industrial byproduct hydrogen purification process, can service radius covering Shandong province and surrounding provinces and cities; Binhua Group has strong technical strength in hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and hydrogenation, and abundant hydrogen production. The byproduct of caustic soda is 16,000 tons of hydrogen per year. Binhua New Material under Binhua Group has a 600,000 tons/year propane dehydrogenation to propylene plant, and 28,000 tons/year byproduct of hydrogen. The strong hydrogen source guarantee is enough for Shandong to reduce the price of hydrogen for vehicles to less than 30 yuan per kilogram during the fuel cell vehicle demonstration period.


The hydrogen supply system in Shandong is still in progress. In October 2020, Shandong Tiexiong Metallurgy started investment and construction of 140t/h coke dry quenching production and coke oven gas hydrogen extraction project. At present, the byproduct of hydrogen of the company is about 77000m2/h. In addition, enterprises such as Mingquan Group, Taigang, Shandong Steel and Fulun are also actively promoting local hydrogen production projects by using byproduct hydrogen resources, which can produce more than 100,000 tons of high purity hydrogen per year, and can increase the production capacity to 140,000 tons per year.


3 The shanxi


Shanxi is the largest coke production base in China, with an annual output of about 90 million tons of coke. The coke oven gas resources are very rich. If all the byproduct of coke oven gas is hydrogen production, the hydrogen production capacity of only one project can reach 8.8 billion cubic meters. The cost of hydrogen production from coke oven gas is low. Relying on the solid coking industry, Shanxi has considerable cost advantages in developing hydrogen energy economy. Shanxi aims to establish itself as China's "hydrogen source" centre.


At present, Shanxi Province is focusing on building a number of hydrogen energy industrial clusters in Taiyuan, Datong, Yangquan, Changzhi, Jinzhong and Yuncheng, among which Datong is the spearhead of the energy revolution. The city is making full use of its own coal resource endowment to develop hydrogen production from coal and industrial byproduct of hydrogen. At the same time, it is also vigorously developing renewable energy power generation by relying on abundant wind power and photoelectric resources, such as water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. Last year, Datong officially started the construction of the province's first comprehensive complementary energy project of hydrogen production and energy storage. After the first phase of the project is completed, it can produce 5000kg of high-purity hydrogen per day, which can meet the needs of 10 500kg hydrogenation stations at the same time.


At the enterprise level, coal/coal chemical enterprises such as Meijin Energy, Lu 'an Group and Yangmei Coal Group are all trying their best to set up coke oven coal hydrogen production business. The main business of Meijin Energy is coking business. The coke oven gas produced in the coking process contains more than 50% hydrogen. Based on a rough calculation of 5.7 million tons of coke capacity per year, 51,000 tons of hydrogen can be extracted from coke oven gas per year, meeting the annual consumption of 13,000 medium trucks or 9,000 buses. Hydrogen production capacity of other coal/coal chemical enterprises can also be seen.


4 In Inner Mongolia


Inner Mongolia is actively exploring a new path of clean energy transformation represented by hydrogen energy. In hydrogen preparation, Inner Mongolia has obvious advantages, especially wuhai city and Ordos City. In Wuhai city, only coke oven and calcium carbide furnace exhaust gas can produce a total of 8.14 billion cubic meters of hydrogen per year. At the same time, Wuhai and its surrounding areas are also rich in wind and solar energy. In the future, the advantage of hydrogen resources can be expanded through hydrogen production from renewable energy. Ordos is rich in coal, wind and light resources, and has a certain basis in hydrogen production from coal and renewable energy.


Relying on the above resource advantages, hebei Construction Investment Corporation, State Power Investment Corporation and Beijing Jingneng Electric Power Co., Ltd. are laying out hydrogen production projects in large scale in the local area. Among them, Beijing Jingneng Power Institute carries out a 5000MW integrated project of wind, light, hydrogen and storage. In terms of hydrogen production, it takes advantage of the local electricity price of scenery and plans to build 20,000m /h water to produce hydrogen. In addition, Jiutai and Air Products Company have decided to establish a joint venture company in Inner Mongolia, using coal to syngas from jiutai's existing chemical industry to prepare high-purity hydrogen and liquid hydrogen. Hongda Industrial Co., LTD., the leading enterprise of chlor-alkali industry, has also decided to invest 50,000 tons of ionic membrane electrolytic salt water to produce hydrogen and hydrogen storage projects in Inner Mongolia. Inner Mongolia's hydrogen energy development has shown a rising trend.


5 The guangdong


From the perspective of hydrogen source, the low valley electrolysis water hydrogen production in Guangdong Province has a good potential of about 6.74 billion Nm³/ year. The petroleum and chemical industries can also provide chemical byproduct of hydrogen, of which refining, propane dehydrogenation, caustic soda and sodium hypochlorite four subindustries have a combined hydrogen production potential of about 1.48 billion Nm³/ year; Hydrogen production potential from renewable energy sources is about 1.21 billion Nm³/ year. Compared to the first three industries, the coking industry has the smallest hydrogen production potential, but it also has about 430 million Nm³/ year. The regional distribution of hydrogen resources in Guangdong province is mainly concentrated in Huizhou, Maoming, Dongguan, Zhanjiang, Jiangmen and other places, and the distribution of hydrogen resources is uneven.


At the present stage, due to the high cost of hydrogen production by water electrolysis, hydrogen resources in Guangdong Province are still mainly industrial byproduct hydrogen, but for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, many purification processes are needed. The balance between the cost of hydrogen production and the quality of hydrogen remains a major challenge in the supply of hydrogen in Guangdong province.


The good news of hydrogen supply in Guangdong province in 2020 is that Guangzhou Petrochemical company took the lead in starting the hydrogen fuel cell hydrogen supply Center Phase I project with an annual output of 1500 tons and put it into operation in December. The purity of hydrogen is up to 99.999%, which meets the national standard of high purity hydrogen, which provides hydrogen source conditions for Guangzhou city and even the whole Hydrogen industry in Guangdong province.


6 Ningdong


Ningxia Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base (hereinafter referred to as "Ningdong Base"), the largest demonstration area of modern coal chemical industry in China, is also transforming to hydrogen energy industry in order to get rid of dependence on coal-based industry.


On the one hand, relying on its own advantages in coal resources, Ningdong Base has formed a relatively complete industrial chain with coordinated development from coal chemical industry to downstream fine chemical industry. Hydrogen production methods include coal hydrogen production, methanol hydrogen production, chemical byproduct hydrogen production, water electrolysis hydrogen production, etc. On the other hand, the local annual sunshine time is more than 3000 hours, solar power generation time as long as 1700 hours. The cost of photovoltaic power generation is as low as 0.25 yuan/KWH, and the cost of producing "green hydrogen" with renewable energy is less than 20 yuan /kg.


In order to make full use of the above resource advantages, in 2020, ningxia Baofeng Energy solar electrolysis hydrogen production, energy storage and comprehensive application demonstration project started construction in Ningdong Base. The project is invested and built by Ningxia Baofeng Energy, with a total investment of 1.4 billion yuan. The project adopts 200,000 kilowatt solar power generation device and a single hydrogen production device with an efficient alkaline electrolytic cell of 1000 cubic meters per hour, with an annual output of 100 million cubic meters of hydrogen, and the cost of hydrogen production is controlled at about 1.54 yuan per cubic meter. Such huge hydrogen supply capacity will ensure the successful transformation of Ningdong base to hydrogen energy, a new industry, to a certain extent.


7 In sichuan


Sichuan province is one of the provinces in western China that started the cultivation of hydrogen energy industry earlier, and its "base gas" for the development of hydrogen energy comes from the rich local hydrogen energy resources. In terms of hydrogen production from renewable energy sources, by 2019, The installed hydropower capacity in Sichuan was 76.96 million kilowatts, and the potential of hydrogen production from water electrolysis is huge. In terms of industrial byproduct of hydrogen, Sichuan province has more than 45 large-scale enterprises in the fields of refining, ammonia synthesis, electrolytic salt water, coking, steel and other fields, which is rich in industrial byproduct of hydrogen. In terms of hydrogen production from fossil energy sources, natural gas resources and reserves exceed 7 trillion cubic meters, and the cumulative proven geological reserves of shale gas are about 1.2 trillion cubic meters. Natural gas and shale gas can be used to develop hydrogen production from fossil energy sources.


In the field of hydrogen preparation, there are leading enterprises in Sichuan such as Tianyi Technology co., LTD., AlILIAN Hi-tech Co., LTD., And Shutai Chemical Co., LTD. In the field of hydrogen storage and transportation, domestic leading enterprises such as Dongfang Boiler and Sinoma Technology are gathered. With abundant hydrogen sources and the gathering of leading companies, sichuan's hydrogen supply is expected to be effectively guaranteed.


Recently, Dongfang Boiler of Dongfang Electric Group has signed an investment agreement with Ya 'an Economic development Zone of Sichuan province for hydrogen demonstration project. One of the contents of the agreement is to provide hydrogen production and hydrogenation services for ya 'an and surrounding cities (prefectural) hydrogen bus demonstration lines and related production enterprises.


8 In zhejiang


Zhejiang is a big energy consumption province, but also a small resource province, the development of hydrogen energy, where will the resources come from? In fact, according to the investigation, the province has developed industry, and the industrial byproduct of hydrogen is relatively large. After purity refining, the cheap cost is only 10,000 yuan/ton, equivalent to 10 yuan/kg, which is very competitive. In addition, renewable energy such as wind, hydro, tidal and solar energy can be converted into hydrogen energy.


Relying on the local byproduct hydrogen resources, the local enterprise Zheneng Group has started to lay out the hydrogen industry. It has made a major breakthrough in the research on key technologies and equipment of large domestic hydrogen liquefaction in cooperation with Aerospace 101 Institute. In addition, it has cooperated with Jiahwa Energy to carry out the full demonstration project of liquid hydrogen in its plant by using the industrial by-product hydrogen of Jiahwa Energy. At present, the construction of civil foundation and plant has been completed, and its goal is to build the first domestic domestic 1.5 ton/day hydrogen liquewing plant with independent intellectual property rights in China.
